|The world-wide spread of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms can be viewed as an ecological consequence of the systematic use of antimicrobial agents. Resistant bacteria prevail in healthcare environments where antibiotic selective pressure is intensive.|
Novel therapeutic approaches are urgently required to deliver the well-documented existing drugs to
i) protect them toward degradation
ii) increase their bioavailability
iii) reduce toxic side effects
iv) increase patient compliance and
iv) reduce treatment duration and related costs.
In this sense, nanocarriers based on cyclodextrins (CDs) are particularly appealing for the delivery of antibiotics, an approach of main interest for tuberculosis (TB), infections related to Salmonella typhimurium, Staphyloccocus aureus and for species most frequently implicated in hospital infections such as enteric gram-negative rods. The CycloN Hit project takes advantage of the high level interdisciplinary expertise of the partners to efficiently encapsulate and protect antibiotics in CD-based nanocarriers to combat resistant bacteria. This will be accomplished through research training of 11 Early Stage and 5 Experienced Researchers who will gather expertise of 11 Full and 6 Associated partners. The final goal is to bring to the preclinical studies an antibiotic formulation for the treatment of TB and more tailored alternative therapeutic approaches for other resistant microorganisms.

The drug-resistant bacteria that pose the greatest health threats: Read the article and see the "Threat list" in Nature/News of this week. The article describes "The list that ranks 12 bacteria or bacterial families is topped by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii...Antibiotic resistance kills an estimated 700,000 people each year worldwide, and some experts predict that number to reach 10 million by 2050 if efforts are not made to curtail resistance or develop new antibiotics".

György Kéri passed away
Professor György Kéri, CEO of associated partner Vichem Ltd, passed away on July 20th, 2016 at the age of 66 after a long fight against an incurable disease. Professor Kéri was a world-wide recognized biochemist and a Professor of Semmelweis University. His outstanding research in the field of cell signaling therapy and related pharmaceuticals made him famous among professionals. He developed several kinase inhibitors for clinical trials including sunitinib, which was approved by FDA for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma and imatinib-resistant gastrointestinal stromal tumor in 2006. Sunitinib was the first cancer drug simultaneously approved for two different indications. Professor Kéri was a member of several national and international biotechnology organizations and editor of Current Signal Transduction Therapy and of Current Opinion in Molecular Therapeutics among others. He founded Vichem in 1999 to develop a kinase inhibitor library and a hit-finding technology called Nested Chemical Library™. At Vichem he has recently developed the DriverHit Library™ for inhibiting the signaling pathways activated by cancer driver genes or mutated tumor suppressor genes. Vichem joined CyclonHit as Associated Partner to share the knowledge on antibiotics against tuberculosis developed by the company. We will miss him.
